The infertility or subfertility is a difficulty to conception. The infertility of a couple is relative rather than absolute and in about 30% of cases no cause is found.

We should be aware that 85% of couples in the general population will conceive within one year of a regular sexual intercourse  ( woman’s age under 38 years). Of those who do not conceive in the first year, about half will do so in the second year.

Natural female fertility declines with age starting 35 years old.

Pregnancy will result from a process that has many steps starting with ovulation, the egg must go through the fallopian tube toward the uterus, fertilization of the egg by the sperm, and the fertilized egg must go inside the uterus and do the implantation.

Infertility happened when there are problems with one or more of these steps.

The treatment of infertile couple has to be by a specialized doctor and has to take in consideration the couple needs and preferences.

PRECISE AND ACCURATE DIAGNOSIS IS IMPORTANT TO DECIDE WHICH TREATMENTS ARE MOST LIKELY TO BE SUCCESSFUL FOR EACH COUPLE.

Fertility drugs

not all fertility problems require IVF or other conception treatments.

A simple medications treatments are effective in the management of many cases of infertility.

Fertility drugs, such as clomiphene and gonadotropins, regulate your reproductive hormones and trigger the release of one or more of your eggs per ovulation cycle. Most women use them for three to six months before conceiving or trying a different kind of treatment.

In Lebanon we have all kinds of drugs we need to do such cycle of stimulation.

IF SIMPLER INFERTILITY TREATMENTS ARE UNSUCCECCFUL, YOUR DOCTOR MAY SUGGEST SOME FORM OF ASSISTED CONCEPTION TECHNIQUE.

THESE TECHNIQUES WILL BAYPASS THE CAUSE OF INFERTILITY AND INCREASE YOUR CHANCE OF CONCEIVING.

Artificial insemination :  INTRA UTERIN INSEMINATION ( IUI )

During artificial insemination, a concentrated dose of sperm (from your partner or a donor) is injected into your uterus with a catheter.

the goal of such procedure is to increase the number of sperm to reach the fallopian tubes so we have a better chance of fertilisation.

IUI in Lebanon could be done in clinic or in an IVF CENTER

In vitro fertilization (IVF):

Involves putting the eggs and sperms together. By natural selection, the egg will usually allow only one sperm to enter and this usually leads to the fertilisation process in the laboratory.  Once fertilization has occurred, the resulting embryos develop for 3 to 5 days before being placed in your uterus. A successful pregnancy can be confirmed about two weeks later.

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)

In ICSI, a single sperm cell is injected directly into an egg with a microscopic needle. This technique is recommended when there are problems concerning the man's sperm. Once fertilization occurs, the resulting embryo is placed in your uterus.

This procedure most commonly used to overcome a severe male factor infertility: very low sperm count or severely impaired sperm function. When sperm have been collected surgically. Some couples who have had failed with a previous IVF treatment.

Surgery

Surgery may help fix genetic defects or blocked fallopian tubes, or remove endometriosis, fibroids, or ovarian cysts.

Donor egg or sperm or embryo:

If you're unable to conceive using your own eggs, sperm, or embryo.

Surrogacy, or use of a gestational carrier

Another woman carries your embryo and gives the baby to you after birth.

GENDER SELECTION:

selection of the gender during IVF will help couple to choose the sex of their future baby.
